My father, Ray R. Robertson, deserves the Nebraska Father of the Year Award. My father exemplifies what it means to be Father of the Year. As my father's oldest daughter, at 37-years-old, I am still daddy's little girl.
Our father reared us in a Christ-centered home and continues to be a positive Christian influence in my children's lives. He provided a Christian education for us during our grade school years and instilled in us a deep faith and love for Christ.
Dad was always active in all of our activities whether it was sports, 4-H, school or any other activity we were involved in. Dad was always in the stands at all of our events. That even carried into our college years as my sister was a collegiate athlete and he made it to every one of her home and away games. He has always had a great commitment to his wife, two daughters and now two son-in-laws and grandsons. Now he is in the stands for all of his grandsons' events. He can be found at their school programs, sporting events or outside teaching them to work on the farm.
Dad is the person who people call for all sorts of advice. I have known people to call my dad for advice in everything from rearing their own families to farming advice. Dad has been an elder in our church and actively involved in our church and community his entire life. He was a teacher and is still an active farmer. He is a person who others trust.
Just over two years ago I was diagnosed with a degenerative, progressive spinal disease. As it turned out, my surgery would take place in Miami, Florida. My dad was with us for my surgery and stayed with us for another two weeks before returning home to help my mom with our sons. Last week I had a brain surgery and once again dad was there for the surgery. He has always been available to help me out in any situation I have faced. Dad is always there with patience and understanding, love and commitment. Dad has always put his family first and exhibited great faith throughout his life. As I am now recovering, at home, from my brain surgery dad spends his days with me to help me take care of my needs. Again, putting his own needs aside to take care of me.
I can think of no one who deserves to receive The Father of the Year Award more than my dad, my hero!
